1 John 3:2
2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
If you have one of those gender neutral Bibles, I would encourage you to dispose of it. Why? A gender neutral Bible will rob the child of God from understanding who and what they are in God. The language in the King James Version was not written to the advancement of the male and the detriment of the female as some would charge, but God used specific language to tell us just how He views us.
So, what does it mean to be a son?
First, understand that when God created male and female, they were one and they were equal. Reread Gen. 5:2 where God called them both "Adam". The dichotomy and dissension between male and female was the result of sin. When they sinned against God, their relationship was redefined in a sinful and unbalanced image rather than a godly image and therefore reduced to a mere shadow of God’s intention. As a result, males were primarily the ones who were able to own land, property and possessions and engage in trade. Familial riches and possessions passed from father to son.
Man did not have the final say in the relation between male and female because God redefined and refined that model through His Son, Jesus Christ. Since Jesus Christ is the Son of God, this means that everything that God has belongs to Him. Jesus has legal inheritance to everything that belongs to God.
What does that mean to us?
Rom. 8:14-17
14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
The scripture tells us that we, through Jesus Christ, become the children of God. When we think of being children of God, you think of the song "red and yellow, black and white, we are precious in His sight" but that's not what we are talking about here. To be a child of God means that we are under God's protection and His provision. We have access to God to provide our daily needs.
Not only are we children of God but the scripture tells us that we are sons of God and we have been given the privilege of being joint heirs with Christ. Since we are sons of God have been given the right to inherit everything He is and everything He has.
When we tell the story of the prodigal son, we only talk about the son that took his portion and left. We never talk about the son that stayed behind. His story is just as important because in the end, his father had to remind him that everything he had already belonged to him. This is what it means to be a son of God. The Bible tells us in Ps. 84:11 that God will not withhold any good thing from those that walk uprightly. We have to learn to operate in the mindset of a son.
Not understanding our place in God will not only keep us in darkness, but it gives Satan a very large playground in which to afflict and torment us. Not knowing who you are and what you are in God causes you to live far beneath your place and privilege. This is an open door for Satan to bring in a spirit of a rejection (one of his chief deceptions), the recurring thought and feeling that "I'm not good enough" or "I don't have what it takes to <fill in the blank>".
In order to grow in God, take your place as a child of God and as a son of God and tell Satan to take his hands off of your provision and your inheritance!
Walk in the authority of a son of God!
